Scholar Voices: My Summer with the TGR Learning Lab
Earl Woods Scholar and University of California, Irvine rising sophomore, Ruben Triscareno spent the summer interning with the Tiger Woods Foundation. Based at the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim these past few months, Ruben joined the academic support staff, assisting in all aspects of our STEM and college access summer programs. STEM Studio, D.C. Edition
The Tiger Woods Foundation met Alesha Russey in March 2016 when she attended our first STEM Studio seminar in Washington, D.C. Since then, she has participated in a number of offerings and reached out to us regarding possibly offering a more intensive training for her school and others in the D.C. area. Likewise, she offered her school site to host and has been one of our biggest champions in informing educators of our work in professional development. Summer Learning at the TGR Learning Lab
Summer is for fun, sun, BBQs—and for many young people, no school! However, all of us at the TGR Learning Lab believe that summer is about opening doors to new opportunities, thinking about one’s future and getting ahead when it comes to preparing for college. We also think it is a time where teachers can have some fun while they collaborate with fellow educators and learn new activities that can be used in their own classroom.
From the TGR Learning Lab to MIT
Without a doubt, Shantanu Jakhete will take MIT by storm this fall. The recent high school graduate and former TGR Learning Lab Florida student has spent the last several years studying STEM and honing and sharing his skills. Everything he’s already accomplished in this short time tells us he’s in a league of his own. And the only thing that trumps Shantanu’s passion for STEM is his deep-seated desire to use his knowledge to help his community and the world. Read on to learn how Shantanu’s drive, with the support of teachers, mentors and the Tiger Woods Foundation, has fueled his love of STEM.
Super Junior Golf Camp in Full Swing!
The TGR Learning Lab’s Golf Department hosted its annual Super Junior Golf Camp on June 19-23 this year and it did not disappoint. In our 5th year since inception, the Super Junior Golf Camp exposes the great game of golf in a safe, nurturing environment. This year, 60 Super Junior students ages 5 to 4th grade were introduced to the game of golf through innovative drills and exercises promoting proper golf fundamentals.
Conquering College Bound Academy
For two weeks this June, Betsy Peña, a program coordinator with the Tiger Woods Foundation’s Earl Woods Scholar Program, took part in her first College Bound Academy as an instructor to 42 rising high school seniors from the Anaheim Union High School District. Betsy, a recent college grad herself, had the opportunity to lead workshops, activities and discussions all geared towards helping her students better navigate the college admissions process. Rounding out the program, Betsy and her colleagues took their students on excursions at the Claremont Colleges as well as had them participate in Disneyland’s Youth Education Series (YES) Program. As she reflects, the College Bound Academy experience proved to be just as rewarding for Betsy as it was for her kids!
TGR Learning Lab Tent Heads to Quicken Loans National
At the Quicken Loans National golf tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation, children and families are encouraged to swing by the TGR Learning Lab Youth Activity Zone for some fun, engaging activities designed for young people of all ages. The TGR Learning Lab Youth Activity Zone will be easily accessed directly across from The Yard and the driving range.
Now Live: TGR EDU: Explore’s Following Nature’s Lead
Last week, TGR EDU: Explore launched its first digital module focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), Following Nature’s Lead, a 20-25-minute experience geared toward middle school students that is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. Using this innovative tool, students will be given the opportunity to explore careers and engineering innovations through the lens of biomimicry.
Building a Foundation Through STEM
For the past four years, the TGR Learning Lab satellite at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School has served as a retreat from the drugs and crime that plagued Gregory Damas’ neighborhood. With plans to attend Villanova University in the fall, Gregory’s resilience and drive stand as an example for others dealing with similar obstacles. Read on to learn how Gregory’s experience with STEM helped build his foundation and has given him the tools necessary to pursue his goals and dreams.
Introducing Paleo Tech
This summer TGR Learning Lab is hosting another group of students for our Summer Academy. We are excited to be offering a new class for upper elementary students called Paleo Tech. While other students will be working with today’s technology, the students in Paleo Tech will be working with some of the tools that got us where we are today.
