In our latest Scholar Voices feature, we hear from rising Lehigh University junior Tsion Taye. A Washington, D.C. native and an Earl Woods Scholar, Tsion takes us inside her first two years as a college student, highlighting some memorable life experiences. Proceeds from tournaments like next week’s Quicken Loans National help us provide the support and resources necessary for students like Tsion to achieve their dreams.

A little over a year ago, the Earl Woods Scholar Program admitted its first cohort of Washington, D.C. high school students at the end of their junior year. This past weekend, we hosted this inaugural group at our first D.C. High School Graduation Celebration Luncheon at Catholic University. In addition to honoring our scholars, the luncheon provided an opportunity to thank all of our families, teachers, counselors and partners who make our work possible and are invested in our scholars’ success.

For a long time, back to my high school days, I remember wanting to become a civil engineer at my dad’s advice. I’ve had my eye on this particular goal in large part because I had a strong desire to help communities by designing and implementing safe civil infrastructure. As an Earl Woods Scholar and with the support of my family, I set my dreams in motion when I was accepted as an engineering student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

The Tiger Woods Foundation hosts a one-day Private College Symposium biennially at the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim, California. As part of TGR EDU: Create’s professional development programming, we welcomed over 100 high school counselors and educators this fall to partake in free workshops and seminars providing information about private universities and liberal arts colleges and how to support students in accessing these unique learning environments.

It’s mid-October and high school seniors across the country are working on their college applications. And with the FAFSA being available on October 1, there is an added component to the college application process. This can be a stressful time for students, who are juggling their school course load, extracurricular activities and family obligations.

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Earl Woods Scholar Chiamaka Obilo, a first-year student at Harvard. Her background of growing up with a resourceful, low-income father in the Igbo-Nigerian community of Boston, coupled with her own health struggles, have led her to pursue a career in the medical field. But she no longer only wants to be a doctor. She has broader aspirations.

Don’t ever tell Earl Woods Scholar Edward Xiong he can’t do something—not only will he do it, he’ll do it so well he’ll knock your socks off. Born in Hangzhou, China, Eddie entered this world with more than his fair share of obstacles. But with every barrier he encountered, he worked tirelessly toward a solution.

At the Tiger Woods Foundation, we have the distinct honor of coming alongside incredibly bright and driven young people, and equipping them with the resources they need to achieve their definition of success. We call them our Unrelenting Champions. A fitting description because they tirelessly and relentlessly pursue their dreams, and achieve them. This month we feature two such champions and Earl Woods Scholars, Andreina & Efosa.

My name is Christine Nzokou and I am an Earl Woods Scholar for the class of 2020 studying at the University of Maryland, College Park. With my freshmen year ending and the summer coming, I was offered an internship position with the Tiger Woods Foundation (TWF), which I gladly accepted.

In today’s post, we hear from one of our newest Earl Woods Scholars, New York native Kaycie Santiago. Kaycie, who will be a freshman at Fordham University this fall, has written and produced her first documentary, “Mirror Mirrors? The Past and Present of Preston High School,” highlighting the history of her former high school.
