Darion’s professional dressing tips

You might say that we should not judge a book by its cover. After all, everything is not as it seems. But when preparing for a job interview, it’s important to always leave the best first impression. Consider these tips as you prepare for your next new and exciting professional endeavor:

1. Neatness – The interviewer’s main priority is to see your ability to perform the job. Employers must also consider how well you will fit into their company culture. Whether you’re applying to an investment banking internship or a startup company, always present yourself in a neat fashion. This means that the clothes you wear should be clean. Additionally, take time to clean and cut your nails and groom your hair before going to an interview. If you neglect to do these small things, potential employers may think that you did not care about the interview or the opportunity to work for their company and dismiss you.

2. Modesty – Unless you are applying for a job in a creative industry, you’ll want to exercise modesty when choosing clothes for an interview. You want your work experience and passion for the job to shine, so on the big day, err on the side of caution. For men, it’s important to have a crisp, solid white Oxford shirt, a dark suit, tie and a nice pair of dress shoes with dark dress socks. For women, have a solid conservative colored suit or skirt prepared with a coordinating blouse. Also, you’ll want to make sure that your jewelry, makeup and perfume are minimal and not distracting.

3. Confidence – Remember that it’s not every day that you get to dress for an interview and that these clothes are meant to make you look sharp! Embody the confidence of the CEO and carry that feeling throughout the interview. If you maintain that you are in control people will respond well to your energy.
