Tiger commits to THE PLAYERS Championship
Tiger Woods has committed to play in THE PLAYERS Championship, May 7-10, at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, he announced Friday. Woods is a two-time winner of the tournament, scoring a one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh in 2001 and a two-stroke triumph over Kevin Streelman, David Lingmerth and Jeff Maggert in 2013.
He did not compete last year due to injury.
Tiger is coming off a strong showing at the Masters, where he posted two straight rounds in the 60s and tied for 17th. Slowed by back problems and swing changes, it marked his first competitive rounds since withdrawing with a stiff back from the Farmers Insurance Open nearly three months ago and first 72-hole finish in an official event since the Open Championship last year.
“I’m very encouraged,” Woods said. “It felt great to get back out there with the guys and compete again. I hit a lot of good shots and look forward to teeing it up again at THE PLAYERS Championship.”
Tiger also has a runner-up finish at TPC Sawgrass. In 2000, he wound up one stroke behind Hal Sutton.
