This is not your average summer camp

Last week, the Tiger Woods Foundation hosted 112 children from military families at the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Southern California for a week of STEM learning, a trip to Disneyland and a variety of interactive and educational activities — as well as an introduction to the game of golf. The represented military branches included Air Force, Army, Marines, National Guard and Navy — and all attended on a tuition scholarship thanks to generous donors.

In celebration of this tremendous event, Kathy Bihr, vice president of programs and education at the Tiger Woods Foundation, shared the reasons why the foundation hosts a Summer Academy each year for children of military families.

“Tiger Woods Foundation provides a unique summer learning opportunity specifically designed for the children of our military. So why does this matter?” Bihr asked. Here’s her answer:

1. These kids are serving their country too. Kids in military families often move multiple times in their young lives and are asked to support their parents when they are deployed. Summer Academy provides a safe and supportive environment where kids can be kids, and learn something beneficial to their future.

2. Less stress = happy kids! Let’s face it, when we are able to dive into an activity that is fun and takes us away from the reality of life, we feel better. It’s not any different for kids of military families – in fact, studies have shown that activities like clubs, athletics and summer programs can decrease a child’s stress level by up to 98 percent! 

3. “Hey, I’ve lived there too!” It’s nice to know there are others out there who have the same experience as you. Many times our Summer Academy participants reconnect with friends they know from their previous deployments.

4. We are in good company! 100 percent of our children of military attend as a result of donors who believe as we do. These special kids deserve a week of camp designed particularly to meet their needs. Camp on!
