Woods nipped by Rose in World Golf semifinal

Tiger Woods came up just short Thursday in the semifinals of the inaugural $5.2 million Turkish Airlines World Golf Final at the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club in Belek, Turkey. He lost by one stroke to England’s Justin Rose, who shot a 2-under-par 69.

Woods owned a two-shot lead against Rose through 12 holes, but his opponent birdied No. 13 and eagled No. 14 to pull ahead. Tiger finished with three birdies and two bogeys to shoot 1-under 70.

Earlier in the day, Woods eliminated top-ranked Rory McIlroy by six strokes after firing a bogey-free 64 in their first head-to-head match.

Rose advanced to the semifinals by shooting a course-record 62 to down current U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson by five strokes.

In the other two group-play matches, Charl Schwartzel posted a 63 to eliminate Matt Kuchar, and Lee Westwood shot 64 to oust Hunter Mahan.

In the semifinals, Westwood tamed the course for a record-setting 61 to easily beat Schwartzel. He will face Rose on Friday for the $1.5 million first prize.
