Tiger makes cut, shoots 70 in second round at the Memorial

Tiger Woods had to work for it, but he will be around for the weekend at the 40th Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Woods made a clutch up-and-down for par on the 18th hole to make the cut on the number.

After opening with a 1-over-par 73 on Thursday, Tiger posted a 2-under 70 on Friday in light rain and humid conditions.

Woods has a 36-hole score of 1-under 143 and is tied for 64th. David Lingmerth is the two-day leader at 12-under 132.

“I feel I made some progress from yesterday,” said Woods, a five-time winner of the event.

A late front-nine starter with Jason Day and Patrick Reed, Tiger began his round with consecutive birdies at the par-4 first and second holes. After a nice par save at the third hole, Woods added another birdie at the par-3 fourth, draining a 20-foot putt.

Woods made a scrambling par at the par-5 fifth, splashing his fourth shot from a back bunker within inches of the cup. He parred the next four holes to make the turn in 3-under 33.

The back nine was more of a struggle, especially off the tee. Tiger bogeyed the par-4 10th hole, then made a good up-and-down for par at the par-5 11th, where he drove into a hazard off the tee and was forced to take a penalty stroke.

Woods rebounded quickly with a birdie at the tough par-3 12th, sinking an 18-foot putt. After a two-putt par at 13, Tiger poured in a 30-foot birdie putt from the fringe at the par-4 14th. He just missed a 15-foot birdie attempt at the par-5 15th, then sustained consecutive bogeys at the par-3 16th and par-4 17th holes, bringing the cut into play.

At the par-4 18th, Woods hit a poor drive into the left rough and played his second shot about 20 yards short of the green. He hit a nice pitch to six feet and made the par putt.

In his last start at The Players Championship, Tiger made a nine-foot par putt on his 36th hole to make the cut.

“Now I just need to put myself in the position where those putts are to win tournaments, not to make cuts,” he said.

Woods continues to struggle off the tee and has hit only 9-of-28 fairways and 17-of-36 greens through the first two rounds. But his putting has come around. Tiger used 27 on Thursday and needed only 24 on Friday.

Tiger will tee off in Round 3 at 8:28 a.m. ET with Zac Blair.
