Tiger helps lead U.S. to victory in NB3 Foundation Challenge

Former Stanford teammates Tiger Woods and Notah Begay III helped lead the U.S. to a 2.5 to 0.5 victory over Asia on Wednesday in the fifth annual NB3 Foundation Challenge at Turning Stone’s Atunyote Golf Club in Verona, N.Y.

Billed as “East Meets West,” the 12-player field was split into twosomes, with Begay and Woods representing the West squad against K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang of the East. Begay and Woods combined to shoot 9-under par and posted a 9 and 7 win.

“We had a great time,” Woods said. “Notah is like a brother to me, and we always have fun together. It was great to catch up and be able to help his foundation at the same time.”

The winning team, which also included Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland of the PGA Tour, and Cristie Kerr and Lexi Thompson of the LPGA Tour, shared $450,000. Tiger presented Begay with a check for $500,000 for the NB3 Foundation, which helps fight obesity and diabetes in the Native American community.

Other members of the East team were Danny Lee, Se Ri Pak, Charlie Wi and Yani Tseng.

On Friday, Woods resumes play in the Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC Boston in Norton, Mass., the second leg of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup playoffs. Tiger, currently third in the FedExCup point standings, won at the TPC Boston in 2006 and is also a two-time runner-up. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Tiger Woods Foundation and Boston-area charities.

Woods is scheduled to begin first-round play Friday at 8:40 a.m. ET on the 10th tee with Nick Watney and Brandt Snedeker. Watney won The Barclays last week at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y., the first of four FedExCup events culminating in the TOUR Championship, Sept. 22-25, at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
