Tiger commits to the Memorial Tournament

Tiger Woods has committed to play in the Memorial Tournament, May 30-June 2, at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, he announced Tuesday. Last year, Tiger became the first five-time winner of the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event, closing with a 5-under-par 67 to score a two-stroke victory.

Woods previously won the tournament in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2009. His average margin of victory in his five victories is 3.4 strokes.

“I always look forward to playing in Jack’s tournament,” Woods said. “It’s a wonderful course, and we are always treated well. We, as players, are very appreciative of what he has meant to the game.”

Tiger is coming off a win last Sunday in THE PLAYERS Championship, his fourth triumph in seven starts on the PGA TOUR this year. The top-ranked Woods leads the TOUR in FedExCup points, money earnings, scoring and putting.

Last year in the Memorial, he birdied two of the last three holes to capture his 73rd PGA TOUR win, tying Nicklaus for second on the all-time list. Tiger has since won five more times and has 78 victories, second only to Sam Snead’s 82.

Woods began the final round last year four strokes off the pace set by Spencer Levin. He would go on to post the second-largest comeback win in tournament history. K.J. Choi (2006), Jim Furyk (2002) and David Edwards (1992) each came from five strokes back to win.

The Memorial Tournament will be Tiger’s final tuneup for the U.S. Open, June 13-16, at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
