Tiger back in action at Quail Hollow
After a three-week break from competition, Tiger Woods returns to action this week in the $6.8 million Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. It will be the first of two straight tournaments for Woods, who will also play next week at THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
After tying for 40th in the Masters, Woods didn’t touch a club for a week, then resumed lengthy practice sessions with swing coach Sean Foley.
“I was struggling with my ball-striking,” Woods said. “Sean and I fixed it. It had to do with my posture. My setup wasn’t quite right, as well as my takeaway. We just needed to do hundreds of reps, and it’s dialed in.”
Last weekend, Woods was in Las Vegas to host Tiger Jam 2012, which raised approximately $1 million for programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation. Bon Jovi and Friends highlighted a sold-out concert at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
“We had a great time,” said Woods, who also did an exhibition for VIP Tiger Jam guests. “Thanks to all involved for helping our kids.”
Woods will be looking for his second PGA Tour victory of the year at Quail Hollow, where he won in 2007. Originally designed by George Cobb in 1961, the layout was remodeled by Arnold Palmer in 1986 and redesigned by Tom Fazio in 1997 and 2003. It stretches 7,442 yards from the championship tees and plays to a par 72.
“I love what [Quail Hollow president] John Harris has done for the event,” said Woods. “He’s going to get a PGA [Championship] there and maybe a Ryder Cup down the road. He means so much to that area and what he’s done for golf in general is just phenomenal. It’s why all the players are there. It’s a great golf course and [because of] what John has done for golf.”
Woods will play in the pro-am Wednesday.
“I’ve gradually been ramping up,” said Woods, who ranks first on the PGA Tour in scoring at 69.03. “I feel very excited about playing the next two weeks.”
Woods begins first-round play Thursday at 1:25 p.m. ET with Webb Simpson and Geoff Ogilvy.
