Play halted with Tiger, Kuchar leading foursomes match

For the second consecutive day, inclement weather interrupted play in the 10th Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. After a 90-minute delay Thursday, play was suspended again Friday for over two hours due to dangerous weather in the area. Nearly an inch of rain fell.

As a result, just two of the six foursomes (alternate shot) matches were completed before darkness. The remaining four will continue Saturday morning beginning at 7:35 a.m. ET.

Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar were 3-up through 12 holes when play was suspended.

On Thursday, the duo cruised to a 5 and 4 victory over Angel Cabrera and Marc Leishman. It marked the first time the top-ranked Woods and Kuchar partnered together in any competition.

They picked up where they left off Friday.

Playing against Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, Woods and Kuchar birdied four of the first five holes before rain halted the match. When play resumed, the U.S. pair continued its success.

On the par-4 first hole, Kuchar found the fairway off the tee and Tiger hoisted his second shot just inside two feet for a tap-in birdie and a 1-up advantage.

The next four holes were halved, with the U.S. and International tandems making three birdies during that stretch. At the fifth, Woods hit a wonderful second shot to reach the green in two and set up a two-putt birdie. The International team made a nice up-and-down to tie the hole.

At the par-4 seventh, Kuchar hit a nice approach and Tiger buried the 15-foot birdie putt to give his team a 2-up lead. But the International team cut the lead in half by making a birdie at the 194-yard, par-3 eighth, where Woods’ 7-iron caught the right bunker.

The Americans regained a 2-up cushion at the par-4 ninth, winning the hole with a par when Oosthuizen failed to convert from close range.

The par-4 10th hole was halved with pars as Oosthuizen and Kuchar made testy putts, and the par-5 11th was halved with both duos making a birdie.

At the par-3 12th, Tiger hit his tee shot into the rough beyond the green. But Oosthuizen’s tee shot found the water and the U.S. won the hole with a bogey to take a 3-up lead with six holes to play.

The United States and International teams split the two matches that were completed. Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley (U.S.) defeated Jason Day and Graham DeLaet (International), 4 and 3. Ernie Els and Brendon de Jonge (International) topped Bill Haas and Hunter Mahan (U.S.), 4 and 3.

The U.S. currently leads The Presidents Cup, 4.5 to 3.5.

The remaining foursomes matches will be completed Saturday, followed by the regularly scheduled slate of play: five four-ball matches and five foursomes matches.

More rain is in the forecast Saturday and Sunday.

Here are the in-progress results for Day 2:

• Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth (U.S.) lead Branden Grace and Richard Sterne (International), 3-up through 14 holes
• Angel Cabrera and Marc Leishman (International) lead Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker (U.S.), 1-up through 13 holes
• Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar (U.S.) lead Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel (International), 3-up through 12 holes
• Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott (International) lead Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson (U.S.), 4-up through 11 holes
