Fog postpones Woods’ third round at Farmers

Thick fog delayed the start of the third round of the Famers Insurance Open by three hours on Saturday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif. When play finally began, it was suspended five minutes later because of more fog.

As a result, second-round leader Tiger Woods never teed off and was sent home at about 6:30 p.m. ET. Although more dense fog is predicted for Sunday morning, tournament officials hope to complete the third round, and a Monday finish is likely.

Eighty-seven players made the cut, necessitating a two-tee start on the front and back nines, with players grouped in threesomes.

“When Mother Nature doesn’t want you to play, you can’t play,” said Mark Russell, the PGA Tour’s vice president of rules, competition and administration.

Woods, a six-time winner of the tournament, has shot rounds of 68 and 65 for an 11-under-par total of 133. He leads Billy Horschel by two strokes.

Third-round play is scheduled to resume Sunday at 10 a.m. ET. Woods, Horschel and Casey Wittenberg are due to tee off on the first hole at 12:10 p.m.
