Final round of BMW Championship suspended

Final-round play of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., was suspended Sunday due to heavy rain. Tiger Woods and playing partner Charl Schwartzel were one of 11 twosomes that did not tee off. Play will resume on Monday at 8 a.m. local time (9 a.m. ET).

Woods and Schwartzel are scheduled to tee off in the third-to-last group at 10:20 a.m. ET.

Play was initially suspended at 11 a.m. ET for 3½ hours due to rain and standing water. Play resumed at 1:30 p.m. ET, but was called again at 3:30 p.m. ET when more rain fell.

“We did everything we possibly could to try and get this thing in,” said Slugger White, vice president of rules and competition for the PGA TOUR. “Mother Nature just won’t give us a break.”

Woods entered the final round of the tournament — the third of four in the FedExCup Playoffs — in fifth place, four strokes behind leader Jim Furyk. The top 30 players on the FedExCup points list advance to East Lake Golf Course next week for the TOUR Championship, where the overall points winner receives a $10 million bonus.

Henrik Stenson is the current leader by 14 points over Tiger. Should any of the top five players on the points list after the BMW Championship concludes win at East Lake, they will automatically claim the big bonus. Tiger has won the FedExCup title twice.

Only six players completed their final rounds on Sunday. Rory McIlroy, Kevin Chappell, Lee Westwood, Charley Hoffman and Scott Piercy were eliminated from the playoffs, and Dustin Johnson is projected to finish 30th.

There is more rain in the forecast Monday morning. However, conditions are expected to improve as the day progresses.
