4-under 67 keeps Tiger in position in Malaysia

Tiger Woods carded six birdies and two bogeys Friday and posted a 4-under-par 67 in the second round of the $6.1 million CIMB Classic at The MINES Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Woods has a 36-hole score of 9-under 133 and is tied for fifth place, five strokes behind pacesetter Robert Garrigus.

“It was just one of those days where I didn’t make enough birdies,” Woods said. “I didn’t have a lot of good looks, and when I did, they were downhill, cross-grain putts that I couldn’t be aggressive on.”

Paired with Jbe’ Kruger of South Africa on another hot and humid day, Tiger toured the front nine in 2-under 33. The highlight of the side was a 37-foot, chip-in birdie at the par-3 seventh hole.

Woods also played the back nine in 2-under, making three birdies and one bogey.

He played the three par-5s well, making birdie on each.

Following Thursday’s first round, more than three inches of rain fell on the course. As a result, players were permitted preferred lies on Friday and made the most of them — Garrigus in particular. For the second consecutive round, the American shot 64.

“I feel good about it,” Woods said of his position. “I just have to go out there and make a bunch of birdies. This golf course can be had, especially if we have the ball in hand like we did today.”

Woods begins third-round play Friday at 10:30 p.m. ET with Ben Crane.
