Tiger joins 2014 Quicken Loans National field

Tournament host and 2009 and 2012 Quicken Loans National champion Tiger Woods is slated to compete at the 2014 Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club, June 23-29. Come watch the PGA TOUR’s best come to life and visit www.QLNational.com for ticket opportunities.

“After a lot of therapy, I have recovered well and will be supporting my foundation next week at the Quicken Loans National,” Woods said on his Facebook page. “I’ve just started to hit full shots, but it’s time to take the next step. I will be a bit rusty, but I want to play myself back into competitive shape. Excited for the challenge ahead.”

The 2014 Quicken Loans National will once again be held in the nation’s capital. Thanks to the tremendous support of volunteers, dedicated sponsors and the DC and Philadelphia communities, the Quicken Loans National has grown into one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR, boasting an impressive list of champions. The event raises funds and awareness for the Tiger Woods Foundation and local charities, while paying tribute to our armed forces.

“We have a great field of 120 players slated for the 2014 Quicken Loans National, and I can’t wait for the week to begin,” tournament director Mike Antolini said. “Fans are going to have a front-row seat to exciting competition, and it’s great to have Tiger playing this week to support the foundation and the event.”

All will be playing for a purse of $6.5 million, including a top prize of $1,170,000.

BY THE NUMBERS

• 120 players in the field
• 66 PGA TOUR winners
• 297 PGA TOUR wins
• Five past Quicken Loans National champions

PAST CHAMPIONS RETURN

Among the field are five players, including Tiger, who have hoisted a Quicken Loans National trophy. Bill Haas will return to the field as defending champion after winning his fifth career PGA TOUR victory at Congressional Country Club in 2013. K.J. Choi, champion of the inaugural Quicken Loans National in 2007, returns looking for his first win since 2011. Justin Rose, 2010 Quicken Loans National champion, and Nick Watney, 2011 champion, both won the tournament when it was contested at Aronimink Golf Club in Newton Square, Pa. Rose comes back to the field as a U.S. Open victor, and Watney will seek a fifth career win.

BACK FOR MORE

There are a plethora of players returning to Congressional Country Club in hopes of clinching a victory after competing in past tournaments. Roberto Castro finished three strokes back of Haas to finish second in the 2013 edition, and he returns to DC with one top-10 on his 2013-14 season resume. Stewart Cink and Jordan Spieth, who posted fifth- and sixth-place finishes at the tournament in 2013, respectively, also return to the field this year. Spieth is currently No. 6 in the FedExCup and has six top-10 finishes this season.

From the 2012 tournament, top-five Quicken Loans National finishers Bo Van Pelt (second) and Robert Garrigus (T4), Seung-Yul Noh and Billy Hurley III all return to the field in hopes of a victory. Noh notched his first career PGA TOUR win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April.

Fan favorites Hunter Mahan and Jason Day, who tied for eighth at the 2012 tournament, will also compete, with a combined seven career PGA TOUR victories between them. Erik Compton, who finished runner-up at the 2014 U.S. Open, is also returning to the field after finishing tied for 68th at the 2013 Quicken Loans National.

MAJOR CHAMPIONS

Congressional Country Club held the 2011 U.S. Open, and it will host major champions at this year’s Quicken Loans National. U.S. Open winners Rose (2013), Webb Simpson (2012), Angel Cabrera (2007) and Ernie Els (1994, 1997), will compete alongside Masters Tournament champions Vijay Singh (2000) and Cabrera (2009), PGA Championship victors Jason Dufner (2013), Keegan Bradley (2011) and Y.E. Yang (2009) and The Open Championship champions Els (2002, 2012) and Stewart Cink (2009).

YOUNG GUNS

The PGA TOUR’s youngest and newest stars will use the Quicken Loans National as a proving ground. Patrick Reed has tallied three PGA TOUR victories in the 2013-14 season, including the Wyndham Championship, World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship and the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, at 23 years of age. Chesson Hadley, 26, captured his first PGA TOUR victory at the 2014 Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com in March. Cameron Tringale, also 26 years old, has recorded six top-25 finishes so far this season, and Morgan Hoffman returns to the field with five top-25 finishes in 2014 under his belt.

2013 RESULTS

Haas collected his fifth career victory at the 2013 Quicken Loans National with a closing 5-under-par 66, recording his win by a three-stroke margin over Castro. Entering the final round, Haas was in a four-way tie for first with Castro, James Driscoll and Andres Romero. The win marked his seventh top-10 showing of 2013, which was tied for first in that category. He joined Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Rose as the only players to win at least once each year from 2010-2013.

This marks the eighth year of the Quicken Loans National and the sixth time it has been held at Congressional. The club has hosted five major championships, including three U.S. Opens, one U.S. Senior Open and one PGA Championship. The Blue Course is expected to measure 7,569 yards and plays to a par-71.
