Tiger Jam Welcomes Earl Woods Scholar Desiree Sim

Desiree Sim Earl Woods Scholar

In just a few short days, TGR Foundation heads to Las Vegas to host its milestone 20th Tiger Jam, an exclusive two-day charity event at the MGM Grand. Since its inception and still true two decades later, proceeds raised through Tiger Jam serve and support our students and scholars throughout the world. On Saturday, May 19, guests in attendance will have the distinct pleasure of meeting one such scholar –Earl Woods Scholar Desiree Sim – who is a product of the work we do.

A New York native and junior at Skidmore College, Desiree epitomizes grit. Uncertainty, loss and, at times, abandonment have shaped her journey since she was three-years-old. But despite the numerous hardships she endured, Desiree’s story is ultimately one of determination and triumph. Valedictorian of her high school and the first member in her family to attend college, Desiree will graduate Skidmore in 2019 armed with a bachelor’s degree in social work and a deep desire to use her struggles as a learning tool to help others.

“I do not identify myself through my past experiences,” she explains. “They motivate me to work harder. I want to make a difference and have an impact on others.”

Desiree, like many of the students we serve, stands as a reminder that by leveling the playing field, our kids are unstoppable.

With an eye on preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow, our STEM programs at our TGR Learning Labs and on our digital academy, TGR EDU: Explore, allow students to explore the careers that are shaping our global economy.

We’re preparing our educators as well, through TGR EDU: Create – giving them the tools, resources, techniques and confidence to deliver innovative STEM and college-access lessons in their classrooms – helping us reach exponentially more students.

For most first-generation college students, like Desiree, who need additional support to thrive in college and beyond, the Earl Woods Scholar Program offers just that – dedicated mentors, professional development workshops, career counseling – and more, to see them through their college journey.
