As we reflect on the many highlights of 2021 we can all acknowledge the change and revivals we experienced together. From advancements in medical approaches to the Coronavirus to the reopening of schools and businesses, this year gave us reasons to reflect where we’ve come from, celebrate how we moved forward and continue working toward a brighter future for everyone.

2018 has been a year with many highlights for TGR Foundation. Our programs and events continued to perform extremely well, allowing us to reach milestones and achieve ambitious goals. Although we’ve celebrated expansions within each of our programs domestically and internationally, I think our most important accomplishment in 2018 was codifying TGR Foundation’s mission, vision and values – the strategic framework that guides all that we do. That framework is critical to the success and long-term viability of any organization. If carefully created and truly followed, it defines who you are, what you do and how you do it, which in turn ensures a sustainable enterprise that can succeed for generations.

Empowering teachers to deliver engaging STEM curricula, TGR EDU: Create’s summer STEM Studio workshops will drive design, innovation and collaboration in Southern California, Washington, D.C. and around the world. STEM Studio, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, will unite a diverse group of professionals with unique teaching experiences and perspectives. The workshops also encourage teachers to leave their comfort zone and engage in new learning experiences to spark ideas in their classrooms.

In just a few short days, TGR Foundation heads to Las Vegas to host its milestone 20th Tiger Jam, an exclusive two-day charity event at the MGM Grand. Since its inception and still true two decades later, proceeds raised through Tiger Jam serve and support our students and scholars throughout the world. On Saturday, May 19, guests in attendance will have the distinct pleasure of meeting one such scholar –Earl Woods Scholar Desiree Sim – who is a product of the work we do.

For a long time, back to my high school days, I remember wanting to become a civil engineer at my dad’s advice. I’ve had my eye on this particular goal in large part because I had a strong desire to help communities by designing and implementing safe civil infrastructure. As an Earl Woods Scholar and with the support of my family, I set my dreams in motion when I was accepted as an engineering student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

In some schools, a focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) can look like buying a few 3D-printers or turning a small area into a “maker space.” For twenty-seven administrators, teacher-leaders, curriculum coaches and teachers, from five Washington, D.C. public and charter schools, their commitment goes a lot deeper.

Working alongside the wonderful team at Discovery Education, we developed another exciting STEM lesson and brought it to life!  With the bright lights and cameras on me, I starred in my first digital lesson for TGR EDU: Explore. After a long day of filming and playing actress for the day, the end result is an engaging training video based on the lesson plan, What’s Lurking in Your Fast Food?, that offers educators a step-by-step guide to setting up this hands-on lesson in their own classroom.

In just a few weeks’ time, TGR Foundation will be heading to the 2018 ASU + GSV Summit in San Diego, California. Founded in 2010 with a collaboration between Arizona State University (ASU) and Global Silicon Valley (GSV), the annual conference brings together business leaders, venture philanthropists, entrepreneurs and K-12 and university leaders and policy makers to discuss how we can use innovation to raise educational outcomes.

Many of our TGR Learning Lab volunteers are former student members who want to give back to our programs and invest in the next generation of students. This month, we would like to recognize one of our former TGR Learning Lab students who is looking to do just that. We are proud to recognize Desi Gonzalez as March Volunteer of the Month!
